An eCommerce journey is only as strong as its checkout
Customers demand choice - are you offering yours enough payment options?
You might have the most compelling product in the world, but if customers can’t pay for it, they won’t buy it. There are a lot of options out there for taking payment online, and we’re not just talking about American Express.
Payment gateways can be hosted externally, or integrated onto your website; they might take the entire balance of an order in one go, or they might offer an instalment option. Different companies offer a wide variety of solutions and it can be hard to work out what your customers need.
Multiple payment methods can yield benefits in market share, but you’ll have to negotiate a separate agreement with each, and not every acquirer will charge the same. You’ll quickly find that companies like PayPal will charge a premium for their service.
At Iconography, we are constantly updating and improving our platform, IXO Commerce, and all of our features are built for both new and existing clients.
Do you want to take advantage of new and innovative payment methods? They're shown to reduce basket abandonment and increase Average Order Values.
You need to be able to take credit and debit card payments online. Typically, these are Visa or Mastercard, and they are the simplest to set up. You simply need a payment gateway that works alongside your Merchant Account. There are plenty of options for this, and they’re largely pretty simple to use at the checkout.
Normally, we would recommend a solution that is embedded into your checkout. Rather than redirect the customer to a third party website for payment, so you can retain control of the customer journey and experience.
Several services can provide shortcuts to your customers; the shorter the process, the higher the conversion. With PayPal and AmazonPay, for example, the customer just has to log into their account. Once done, delivery and payment information is automatically imported through an API call. The customer simply has to confirm the order.
They don’t have to enter their address or find their card; all of this is stored by the third party, which makes the checkout process a whole lot quicker!
Studies vary, but the general thinking is that a BNPL scheme, if used and marketed correctly, can increase average order values from any between 20% and 40%. These schemes might take the form of Interest Free Credit over 36 months for large transactions, or smaller transactions over just a couple of instalments.
Just take a look at some of the providers that we've worked with over the years. Each of these can take a large transaction and split over 12, 24 or 36 months.
The most famous example of the second type is Klarna. They specialise in the fashion industry, but have been branching out, backed by heavy investment and aggressive advertising. However, while they may be the best known, they may not be the best. Other competitors include Clear Pay (from Afterpay), as well as a host of smaller companies offering a similar service.
Be sure that you choose the company that has the rights T&Cs and most competitive rates for you and your business; there’s a lot of volatility in this marketplace.
At least 36% of online shoppers in 2020 were using mobile wallets like Apple Pay or Google Pay, but only 9% of eCommerce websites actually offered them as payment types. Despite their popularity amongst customers, there has been a slow uptake online.
The simple problem is that a lot of traditional acquiring banks don’t work with them, or haven’t integrated them into their payment gateways. This means that even well established businesses like Opayo simply aren’t set up to take payments in this way; a lot of retailers have been left without options.
Fortunately, other payment providers have stepped up, and we now work with several that fill this gap.
There are plenty of other options out there for eCommerce businesses. So if you need to set up direct debits or recurring payments for subscriptions, or you’re looking for a pay by link solution for offline orders, so long as your payment gateway provides what you need, we can handle the integration.
IXO Commerce is built to work with a wide variety of payment services, so it's guaranteed to be the right fit for you. Traditional methods like credit and debit cards sit alongside cutting edge payment wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay, while complex integrations for Buy Now Pay Later are our bread and butter.
If you want to offer the widest variety to your customers, you might want to take a look at payment aggregators like Adyen and Braintree. These combine multiple methods into a single payment gateway, making them efficient solutions.
